Piazza della cisterna – San Gimignano
The unusual triangular shape of Piazza della Cisterna is a striking feature of the tower filled Tuscan town of San Gimignano!
Surrounded by beautifully preserved stone houses and medieval towers, Piazza della Cisterna is constructed of brick and acts as a central meeting and trading area in San Gimignano. The Piazza earned its name from an underground cistern which was built here in 1287. It’s topped by an octagonal pedestal which was later added in 1346.
