If you’re spending some or all of your Italian vacation in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia then be sure to visit the archaeological area and ancient basilica of Aquileia!
Aquileia was one of the largest and richest cities during the early reign of the Roman Empire before being viciously destroyed by Attila in the 5th century.Today this area is a vast archaeological site with much of the city ruins still remaining uncovered beneath the earth. One of the most fascinating buildings excavated here is the patriarchal basilica (in the picture).
